General anesthesia is the use of a special gas called Sevoflurane through a mask. It helps your child not feel any pain or sensations during surgery or other painful procedures.
It's normal to worry about your child. However, dentists take many steps to ensure everything's completely safe.
Before a dental procedure, a pediatric dentist checks the child's health to make sure they're okay for anesthesia. On the day, the child shouldn't eat for a few hours beforehand to avoid any complications.
Anesthesia is then given by a specialist. During the procedure, the child's vital signs are watched closely. After the dental work, the child rests in a recovery area until they wake up.
A trained specialist, like a pediatric anesthesiologist, is there to take care of everything. They will use a small mask that fits over your child's nose and mouth, which lets them breathe in a sleeping gas. It's gentle and works quickly to help your child drift off to sleep without discomfort.
Sometimes, if needed, they might use an IV, a tiny tube placed in a vein, to give medication that helps your child sleep during the dental work. The medical team will keep a close eye on your child's heartbeat, breathing, and other important signs to make sure everything is going well.
The pediatric anesthesiologist takes about 30 minutes to prepare your child for dental treatment. This includes everything from putting on the mask for anesthesia to setting up the IV, if needed, and checking if your child is safely prepped for the procedure.
Next, the pediatric dentist will take X-rays of your child's teeth. They will also clean your child's teeth. You might already have a treatment plan from another dentist, but our dental team will make a new one to ensure that everything is up-to-date.
Our board-certified pediatric dentists make all treatment decisions with your child's best interest in mind. We are required to treat any decay found, and the total time under anesthesia is generally between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the severity of the decay.
And yes, you can be in the same room as your kid while we do the procedure.
After your child wakes up from anesthesia, they will spend a little time in the recovery area, where the dental team can watch them closely. Usually, kids are ready to go home about 2 hours after they wake up. Once home, it's normal for them to feel a bit sleepy for the rest of the day.
Just remember to follow any care instructions the dentist gives you, like what foods to eat and any medicine your child might need.
We totally understand your concerns! If it helps, we'd be happy to connect you with another parent whose child has already gone through a similar procedure here. Talking to someone who has been in your shoes can be really reassuring.
Remember, we're here to make sure everything goes safely for your child, and we're happy to talk through any questions you might have. Just give us a call or talk to us during your visit.
