What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

The most common types of dental emergencies are:

  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A cracked tooth
  • Severe toothache
  • Bitten/cut tongue or lip
  • An object stuck between teeth
  • Sudden or severe gum swelling
Here’s what to do first if your child experiences any of these.

A Knocked-Out Tooth

Immediately rinse their mouth with water to clean the area. Then, use a cold, wet washcloth or gauze to hold against the area to stop the bleeding and reduce swelling.

A Cracked Tooth

If your child has a cracked tooth, first rinse their mouth gently with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the face to minimize swelling. Contact us as soon as possible to prevent further damage or infection.

Severe Toothache

Until you reach our office, clean carefully around the sore tooth. Use warm salt water to rinse the mouth. It can help dislodge any trapped food particles that might be causing pain.

Bitten/Cut Tongue or Lip

If your child bites or cuts their tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water. Apply a cold compress to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding is persistent or the cut is deep, it may require medical attention.

An Object Stuck Between Teeth

If there is something stuck between your child’s teeth, try rinsing their mouth with warm water to loosen it. Use dental floss to gently remove the object. Just be careful not to push it deeper.

Sudden or Severe Gum Swelling

Rinse your child’s mouth with a mild saltwater solution to reduce irritation and cleanse the area. Apply a cold compress externally to the cheek. Avoid applying heat as it can worsen the swelling. It’s important to come and see us as soon as you can.
In case of any emergency, please don’t hesitate to contact us immediately. Our doors are always open for you.
